marrow.jpg (2839 bytes)
The predecessor to the Marrow Scoop was the Marrow Spoon which appeared in England in the 1690’s. It had a gilded, rat-tail bowl and it likely formed part of a traveling set. After 1715 the Marrow Scoop became quite popular. A Marrow Scoop usually has two grooved channels of unequal width, sometimes facing in opposite directions, the waist is sometimes faceted and these were used for scooping the marrow from bones. Marrow Scoops are not commonly found in American Silver.

fish_slc.jpg (2548 bytes)
The Fish Slice was introduced about 1750 and was plain with a hollow silver handle. By 1780 the slice frequently had a turned and stained ivory handle, but by the 19th century a fish slice was included with a flatware service and the silver handles were of the same pattern. The blades of Fish Slices can range from being very plain to extremely elaborate with pierced and engraved fish or dolphins on the blade.

stuffing.jpg (5957 bytes)
The largest spoons found in the late 17th and early 18th centuries were thought to have been used in the kitchen for basting and serving. A number of them had turned wooden handles but by 1715 they were basically spoons, greatly enlarged. In American Silver a spoon must be over 11" long to be a stuffing spoon. A Hash Spoon has a larger and broader shape to the bowl than a stuffing spoon and is much rarer.
