Hugh H. Campbell  (1905-1981)

Hugh H. Campbell was born in 1905 in Atcheson, Kansas. He moved with his family to Mt. Holly, N.J. in 1915. Campbell was a self-taught artist whose patrons and friends frequently financed his work. He painted in and around the Mt. Holly, New Jersey area and along the Rancocas Creek.

Campbell exhibited in the Clothesline Exhibition of 1937 in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia and had a private Exhibition at Swarthmore College shortly thereafter.

Not much information is available on this artist but some exceptional works are now appearing. He stated in a newspaper article on August 22, 1948 that he had been greatly influenced by Redfield, Baum, and Inness and he was further quoted as saying “To any one who wishes to paint for love of painting, go ahead. If you merely dream of wealth from your work, you may see your dream come true. But this everyone should remember: What is done without love has no enduring power.”
