| Born February 15, 1855 in Greenwich,
CT and died January 29, 1931 in Oswego, NY.
James G. Tyler studied with Archibald Cary Smith who had been a shipwright until the 1860s and specialized in yacht portraits. Known as a Marine Artist, Tyler painting pictures of every Americas. Cup Racer since 1900. In 1930, at age 75 he went to the races off Newport and made portrayals of the "Shamrock" and the "Enterprise" which were later exhibited at The Union League Club. He was a member of The Brooklyn Academy, The Artists Fund Society, The Greenwich Society of Artists. He exhibited at The National Academy of Design, The Corcoran Gallery, The Tokyo Museum, The Wadsworth Athenaeum, The Mariners Museum. |
