| MARY RUSSELL SMITH (1842-1878) | ||
| Mary Russell Smith was the daughter of
Russell Smith (1812-1896) and the sister of Xanthus R. Smith (1839-1929). Unlike her
father and brother, she sketched directly from nature often depicting the animals and
insects she encountered. Her favorite pastime was raising poultry, a hobby that led her to
specialize in painting small, highly detailed compositions of chickens. She exhibited at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1859 to 1869 then again from 1876 to 1878; The National Academy of Design in New York City and The Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia. |
